The chronic schistosomiasis disease caused by Schistosoma mansoni is characterized by a Th2 response. Both diseases can present as chronic form and often associated with rural area. Objective: The purpose of this work was to analyze the presence of the IgG anti-Paracoccidioides brasiliensis (Pb) in patients with schistosomiasis. Methodology: Serum from patients with chronic schistosomiasis (n = 100) were analyzed by ELISA, using Pb exoantigens (exoAg) and purified specific Pb 43 kDa glycoprotein (gp43). Cytokines (IFN-γ and IL-4) were measured in serum samples from: patients with schistosomiasis presenting positive reaction to Pb antigens (n=18), patients with schistosomiasis presenting negative reaction to Pb antigens (n = 9) and normal human serum (n = 9) by ELISA. Results: The results of ELISA with exoAg were positive in 18 samples (18%) and 14 samples with gp43 (14%). Elevated INF-γ serum level was observed in patients with schistosomiasis presenting positive reaction to Pb antigens in relation to others groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study report for the first time the schistosomiasis cases with antibodies against specific Pb antigens and if is due to concomitant infection requires further investigation. Higher INF-γ serum levels in this group of patients suggest a predominantly Th1 response.
