Brazilian Journal of Microbiology - BJM

Mission

  • To publish original works (full papers and short communications), resulting from research carried out in all countries, in all areas of  basic and applied microbiology. Efforts are made so that each issue of  BJM contains at least one review article written by a specialist especially invited for this purpose. All articles are written entirely in English.

    Editorial Board

    • The editorial board was modified in 2009, to include Associate Editors for each of the  areas covered by BJM.

    Editorial Policies

    • BJM has a strict policy of evaluation by pairs, in which each paper submitted for publication is reviewed by at least two specialists in the corresponding area. The Brazilian reviewers are selected based on their expertise, as indicated in the Curriculo Lattes, and the international reviewers are chosen according to their prominence in the corresponding area. It is a policy of the Brazilian Journal of Microbiology that any person involved in the publication process (authors, reviewers, members of the editorial board and assistants) must be without conflict of interest, which can negatively influence the assessment, objectivity and loyalty to the authors. BJM recognizes that any conflict of interest detected should be promptly noted and rapidly resolved. Conflicts of interest can be potential, perceived or real. In addition, the author(s) should give notice, in the article, if the research project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the institution, in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki (http://www.ufrgs.br/HCPA/gppg/helsin5.htm).
    • In experimental studies involving animals, the established guidelines in the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals" (Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C. 1996), and the “Princípios Éticos na Experimentação Animal do Colégio Brasileiro de Experimentação Animal COBEA,” www.cobea.org.br/index.php?pg=Principios %20Eticos, should be  respected.

Indexations

  • The indexers of greatest importance are: Web of Science (ISIThompson), PUBMED, SCOPUS (Elsevier), SciELO, DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), OpenJ-Gate, Genamics Journal Seek, FSTA (Food Science and Technology Abstracts), LILACS and BIOSIS.

QUALIS

Current Demand

  • With the implementation of the online submission system in 2006, there was a significant increase in the number of works submitted for publication, mainly by authors of other countries. Unfortunately, the rejection rate of papers increased greatly, because the majority of these were not in accordance with the quality standards required.

Middle-term Perspectives

  • a) To increase the number of works published in each issue to 50 – with the aim of beginning in 2011
  • .b) To increase the number of articles published in each number;
  • c) To reduce the  evaluation time of a manuscript to a maximum of three months;
  • d) To adopt new strategies to increase the impact factor;

About BJM

The journal Brazilian Journal of Microbiology is a publication of the Brazilian Society of Microbiology.  It is the only scientific journal indexed in international databases exclusively for the area of microbiology, published in the country. The publication BJM was started in 1959, when the name was still Revista Brasileira de Microbiologia, and in 1970, it was renamed Revista de Microbiologia (ISSN 0001-3714). In  2000, starting with Volume 31, Number 1, it was again renamed with the current name. Since 1970, the periodical has been published quarterly, without interruption. There were some opportunities to publish special supplements.  Up to the last issue of 2005 (Volume 36 Number 4), it was printed on paper, but starting in 2006, printing was changed to CDROM. Finally, as of the last issue published in 2008 (Volume 39, Number 4, 2008), publication was only by electronic means. Access to the published articles is free through the following portals: SciELO www.scielo.br/bjm and Brazilian Society of Microbiology www.sbmicrobiology.org.br. In January 2006, the electronic submission system was implemented. Initially, submission of manuscripts was done at www.bjmonline.com.br, and beginning in March 2009, the Scielo system of submission was utilized (http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/bjm/index). From that moment on,  at which time the electronic submission process was begun, no longer were works accepted when sent by other routes (email, regular mail, etc). In these cases, the authors were told that they needed to utilize the  electronic system. The whole process of evaluation of the works submitted for publication, as well as communication between authors and editors, occurred via the online system, using a login access and password. It should be noted that the quality indices of the journal were systematically improved. Recently, the impact factor determined by ISI increased from 0.329 (2008) to 0.548 (2009) and 0.622 (2010). This 66% increase in impact factor reflects the efforts that all of us have made to improve the quality of the journal in the last years.

SBM since 1956

The Brazilian Society of Microbiology (SBM) is a public nonprofit organization, with a scientific basis, and was founded on September 28, 1956. SBM is active in basic and applied microbiology, which can be subdivided into areas in accordance with the scientific advances of each sector.

SBM organizes and promotes Symposia, Congresses and Courses  in different areas in  different parts of the country. Every two years, SBM sponsors the Brazilian Congress of Microbiology (CBM), where it congregates the different areas of microbiology, with the  participation of about 3000 persons, including scientists, professors, students, private professionals and other interested parties. The Congress is composed of symposia, conferences, round tables, oral presentations of works and poster sessions, and encompasses all areas of basic and applied microbiology. SBM Awards for Scientific Merit are given to works selected by an international commission. CBM excels by the inclusion of the above themes, excellence of presentations,  and intense participation of the microbiology community in Brazil and in various other countries, as well as providing a  casual environment. These factors make the event an interesting  and unforgettable forum of exchange of knowledge and of fraternization.
